Driving simulators
Driving simulators for railway and mass transit operators

For more than 15 years, Transurb Technirail has been specialized in the field of the training of the railway and metro simulation.

A driving simulator is a training device that brings a significant increase in value from an educational point of view. As a matter of fact it makes it possible for the driver to be immersed in a driving environment that is close to the reality.

The purchase of a driving simulator must first follow the adoption of a strategic decision: reduce on medium and long term the operational and training costs by specializing the training courses and associated infrastructure and take repossession of operational equipment made available previously for the training of the drivers.

Transurb Technirail has developed an integrated and modular system of the following formely simulators :
  • Computer Based Trainer (CBT);
  • Partial Task Trainer (PTT)
  • Full Scale Simulator.
The “Full Scale”:

The driver is fully immersed in a driving atmosphere that is very close to the reality. As a matter of fact, he has a real driving desk integrating all the real driving instruments. The latter are located in the same place as in the real driving machine.

The inside and the outside of the simulator cabin are then very similar to those of the simulated train.

In order to increase the driver’s immersion, the “Full Scale” simulators also have a dynamic platform. It reproduces the movements of the train.

Partial Trainer:

This type of simulator is a lightened version of the “Full Scale” simulator; the driver always has all his real driving instruments in front of him although there is no reproduction of the dynamic movement of the cabin.

CBT (Computer Base Training) :

This 3rd type of simulator is suitable when the railway operator wants to train his/her drivers over a few educational aspects. (Example: training to using a new equipment on board in the cabin).

The driver has a generic desk in front of him that integrates only the instruments the driver mostly uses (ex: Throttle Hauling-Braking, treadle of vigilance…). The other instruments are there also but they are represented virtually so that the driver can see them on tactile screens.

These simulators are very light as far as their conception is concerned. Transurb Technirail provided the R.A.T.P (Metro of Paris) with 18 of them for the training of the type “Ouragan” metro drivers.

These simulators are also particular in the sense that they make it possible for one instructor to follow several simulators in parallel.

References :

Transurb Technirail can study and manufacture, alone or in association with other companies, every type of simulator that is adapted to the needs of the users, as well as modules to be integrated in other systems. For this reason, Transurb Technirail has set up partnerships with developers of simulator softwares in the field of railway simulators.

In addition, Transurb Technirail can provide advice, studies and proposals to the client in integrating simulators in the vocational training of his staff.

Presently Transurb Technirail is working for different clients in several countries :

  • 1 driving simulator for the new metro vehicles CAF of Brussels;
  • Renovation of the ALSTOM/BOMBARDIER M3/M5 series metro driving simulator – STIB;
  • Renovation of the driving simulator for the ALSTOM tramway vehicle T2000 –STIB ;
  • Study and realization of a full scale driving simulator with dynamic platform for the FLIRT suburban train of the Swiss rolling stock manufacturer – STADLER (SNTF );
  • Study and realization of two driving simulators for the SIEMENS and CITADIS Light Rail System in Tunis (TRANSTU );
  • Study and realization of a bus and truck driving simulator for Jamaica.

With the support of its major shareholders, the S.N.C.B. and the Brussels Mass Transit Authority (S.T.I.B.), Transurb Technirail is offering services which only an operator can provide.
